mechanical metamaterials under adaptable topology optimization Project Details
| Abstract |
This research project looks at creating mechanical metamaterials with a flexible topologyβoptimization design framework. Mechanical metamaterials show unusual propertiesβlike negative Poissonβs ratios or very high stiffnessβtoβweight ratiosβthat come mainly from the shape of their microstructure, not from the materialβs chemistry. To design these complex structures in a systematic way, we examine a flexible topologyβoptimization method that can shape unit cells to achieve specific mechanical behaviors. The framework combines numerical homogenization with either densityβbased or levelβset topologyβoptimization algorithms. This lets us evaluate and improve the effective, macroβscale properties of the metamaterial. Finite element analysis (FEA) is used to simulate how the material deforms and where stresses develop under different loading conditions.
By setting up an adaptable optimization loop, the design process can handle many goals, such as maximizing energy absorption or tailoring stiffness in particular directions. The work provides clear guidance for studying how geometric constraints and volume fractions affect metamaterial performance, offering a reliable computational path for advanced structural and aerospace applications.
