modelling anisotropic inelastic response polymeric scaffolds Project Details

Abstract

The project implements and validates a constitutive model that captures the anisotropic, inelastic behavior of electrospun polymer scaffolds used in cardiovascular tissue engineering. These scaffolds act as temporary extracellular matrices; after implantation they experience complex loads and are slowly replaced by the body’s own tissue. To predict their short‑term response under physiological conditions, the anisotropic inelastic model is embedded in a finite‑element framework. The model is coded as a user‑defined material subroutine in a commercial finite‑element software package. Verification is done with simple deformation cases, including uniaxial and biaxial tension. A large parallel‑plate compression test is also simulated and compared with experimental data. This computational tool helps engineers design scaffolds

with optimized mechanical properties for patient‑specific cardiovascular grafts and heart‑valve replacements. The work provides a clear, step‑by‑step implementation for modeling fibrous biomaterials under large deformations.
