Numerical simulation water hammer characteristics Project Details
| Abstract |
Electric globe valves in automatic waterβinjection drainage systems often have to close in less than 1 second. This fast closing can cause strong waterβhammer effects, which produce vibration and noise. Usually engineers analyze the problem with a oneβdimensional Method of Characteristics (MOC). MOC does not capture the threeβdimensional flow patterns or the shortβterm changes inside the fluid. This project uses Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) with Ansys Fluent to simulate the transient flow field while the valve closes. By modeling the moving mesh of the valve plug, the simulation tracks how pressure spikes and velocity fields evolve in space and time. The study examines how inlet pressure, valveβclosing speed, and the
specific motion law of the plug affect the magnitude of the waterβhammer phenomenon. The results show that selecting an optimal motion law and closing velocity can greatly reduce the amplitude of pressure pulsations. Because the original source provides no experimental validation data, the work does not include physical testing. The scope is limited to numerical modeling and a parametric sensitivity analysis.
