Optimization extrusion process parameters FDM Project Details

Abstract

This research investigates the optimization of extrusion parameters for producing Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) filaments from recycled PLA-PETG blends, addressing the mechanical performance limitations often associated with recycled polymers in additive manufacturing. The study employs the Taguchi method to efficiently evaluate the impact of key process variables, including PLA content, extrusion temperature, and extrusion speed. To achieve simultaneous optimization of multiple performance characteristics, specifically tensile strength and elongation, Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) is integrated with the Taguchi approach. The methodology identifies an optimal parameter set comprising 30 wt% PLA, an extrusion temperature of 225 Β°C, and an extrusion speed of 300 mm/min. This optimized condition yielded a filament with a

tensile strength of 7.47 MPa and an elongation of 1.58%, representing a significant improvement over baseline conditions. While the mechanical properties remain lower than commercial virgin materials, they are deemed suitable for low-stress functional applications. Fractographic analysis further elucidates the underlying mechanisms, attributing limited ductility to poor interlayer and interfacial adhesion. The findings underscore the efficacy of the Taguchi-GRA methodology for balancing mechanical properties in recycled polymer filament production.
