Performance Evaluation Networks Gain Scheduling Project Details

Abstract

Networked Control Systems (NCS) offer significant advantages in modern industrial automation, including remote operability, reduced wiring complexity, and enhanced system flexibility. However, the insertion of communication networks within feedback loops introduces critical challenges such as network-induced time delays and packet dropouts, which can severely degrade the performance and stability of nonlinear systems. To mitigate these adverse effects, this project focuses on the implementation and evaluation of a Gain Scheduling Proportional-Integral-Derivative (GS-PID) controller. Utilizing the MATLAB-based TrueTime toolbox, the proposed control framework is simulated across three distinct network protocols: Ethernet, Controller Area Network (CAN), and switched Ethernet. The performance of the GS-PID controller is systematically compared against conventional PID controllers under

varying network conditions. The evaluation metrics focus on transient response characteristics, specifically settling time and overshoot. The simulation results demonstrate that the GS-PID controller provides superior adaptability to network-induced constraints, yielding a 15% to 22% improvement in transient performance metrics across the evaluated network topologies. This research direction provides valuable structuring and implementation support for designing robust controllers in delay-prone communication environments.
