Research Frequency Regulation Strategies Wind Project Details
| Abstract |
The paper tackles the problem of grid frequency swings that occur when a lot of wind power is connected. It examines a coordinated frequencyβcontrol approach that combines a directβdrive permanentβmagnet synchronous generator (PMSG) wind turbine with a hybrid energy storage system (HESS). The turbine runs in a deβloaded mode by using virtual inertia, overβspeed, and pitch control together. The storage units help regulate frequency through virtual droop and virtual inertia control, and they are coordinated by thresholds on the realβtime frequency deviation. A main contribution is a new frequencyβcontrol method that uses PI speed reduction to handle sudden drops in load. Simulations show that this combined control improves the systemβs
inertial response and overall frequency regulation. Because the results come from simulations only, more work is needed to test how communication delays and hardware limits affect the method in a real grid.
