Research Model Predictive Control PMSM Project Details
| Abstract |
This project develops and tests a new Model Predictive Control (MPC) scheme for permanentβmagnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives used in highβaltitude airship (HAA) stratospheric propulsion. In the stratosphere the air is thin and cold, so keeping speed ripple low and making current control fast are essential for a longβlasting propulsion unit. First, a mathematical model of the PMSM is built and examined. Then a torqueβobserverβbased MPC method is created to improve tracking of the motorβs dynamics and to reject disturbances. The control approach is run in a simulation of a 6 kW, lowβspeed, highβtorque, directβdrive PMSM propulsion system. Its performance is compared with a traditional proportionalβintegral (PI) regulator and with
a standard MPC controller. The comparison looks at static and dynamic response times, current ripple, and speedβtracking accuracy under different load conditions. The results give clear guidance for applying robust predictive control in aerospace propulsion, helping to reduce torque pulsations and boost reliability in lowβpressure, lowβtemperature environments.
