Role polyacrylonitrile fiber diameter aspect Project Details
| Abstract |
This M.Tech level research project aims to explore how geometric parameters, specifically diameter and aspect ratio, of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fiber influence the mechanical properties and pore structure of cementitious mortars. It attempts to characterize the behavior of the dual mechanism of crack-bridging reinforcement and a shift in dominant matrix-structure densification strengthening. The project aims to PAN fibers of the same length but differing diameters (~15, 35, and 40 ΞΌm) and at different volume fractions (0.2% to 0.6%); thus, isolating the impact of aspect ratio while all other variables are controlled. The primary goal is to demonstrate that sufficiently fine, high aspect ratio fibers can shift the dominant mechanism of reinforcement
from traditional crack-bridging to pore-filling and stress transfer enhancement at the fiber/matrix interface. This is expected to create a dual improvement of compressive and flexural strength and a reduction in detrimental capillary and macroporous structures, improvement that can be detected by higher order methods.
