Studying Effluent Quality Enhanced Modified Project Details

Abstract

This research investigates the efficacy of an enhanced Modified Ludzack Ettinger (MLE) process integrated with an Oxic Settling Anaerobic (OSA) system for the treatment of real municipal wastewater. The primary objective is to evaluate the performance of this combined E-MLE-OSA configuration, specifically focusing on its ability to improve effluent quality. The study employs a pilot-scale experimental setup comprising three distinct systems: a conventional MLE process serving as a control, and two E-MLE-OSA configurations, designated MLE-OSA4 and MLE-OSA6. These enhanced systems incorporate Sludge Holding Tanks (SHTs) within the return sludge line, with MLE-OSA4 featuring a 70-L SHT operating at a 4-hour Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT), and MLE-OSA6 utilizing a 107-L SHT

with a 6-hour HRT. The influent for these pilot studies is sourced directly from the overflow effluent of the primary settling tank of a municipal wastewater treatment plant. Following an initial stabilization period of 45-60 days to achieve steady-state conditions, comprehensive analyses are conducted. Key parameters assessed include Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Oxidation-Reduction Potential (ORP), temperature, pH, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), and various nutrient concentrations. This systematic evaluation aims to provide insights into the operational characteristics and treatment efficiencies of the E-MLE-OSA process under varying HRT conditions for municipal wastewater applications.
