The Impact Layers Orientation Mechanical Project Details
| Abstract |
The application of additive manufacturing technology, including 3D printing, makes it possible to design and manufacture less heavy and more individualized prosthesis. The mechanical strength of 3D printed prosthetic shanks, however, is affected by printing position because of the processes that are essentially anisotropic for fused deposit modelling (FDM). This research examines the effect of layer orientation on the mechanical and fatigue characteristics of prosthetic components made of polylactic acid (PLA) and manufactured with this process. Specimens for standard tensile and fatigue tests were prepared from PLA using three different print orientations. The results from the tensile tests clearly illustrated the anisotropic nature of the printed specimens. It is also
worth mentioning that the printed samples in the horizontal orientation yielded the highest strength (61.3 MPa and 60.7 MPa) compared to the vertically printed sample which demonstrated a yield strength of only 24.7 MPa, which is approximately a 60% reduction in strength. In addition, the sample fatigue life tests indicated that specimens from orientations A and B provided superior fatigue resistance when compared to those from orientation C. This is likely due to the improved filament bonding in these orientations. Overall, the results of this study underline the importance of print orientation in predicting the performance and durability of 3D printed prosthetic shanks.
