| Abstract |
The widespread use of oil-based synthetic polymers in almost all sectors of industry has created serious problems with their environmental incompatibility because they cannot be incorporated into biotic recycling systems. This challenge needs to be addressed to achieve a circular bioeconomy (CBE), focused on sustainable management of resources and waste. Biopolymers are advantageous and environmentally friendly substitutes for traditional synthetic polymers. Originating from various biomass resources, they offer unique benefits such as raw materials that are low or free of charge, greater environmental acceptability, and easier processing. This research project aims to develop a systematic study of the sources, synthesis, structure, and characterization of biopolymers and their composites with a
primary focus on their use in water and wastewater treatment, including processes for the removal of suspended solids (coagulation, flocculation, and adsorption), to evaluate the efficiency of these biopolymeric substances in the removal of pollutants and to study the mechanisms involved in this process. By characterizing their properties and performance, this study aims to provide novel approaches to alleviate the environmental problems of conventional polymeric materials in wastewater treatment and to promote the principles of a circular bioeconomy.
