Waste Plastic Rubber Modified Bitumen Project Details
| Abstract |
The growing global problem of plastic and rubber waste that do not decompose naturally and their disposal requires innovative and responsible methods. One of the more promising areas of research is the modification of bitumen with plastic and rubber waste. This approach aims to improve the performance of pavements and decrease their environmental impact. Based on the authorβs analysis of the relevant national and international literature, the topic addresses the consistent positive change of the principal engineering characteristics of flexible pavements. It is noted that the addition of waste plastics in the form of LDPE, HDPE, and PET significantly improves the rigidity, moisture, and rutting resistance. At the same time,
the addition of crumb rubber from waste tires enhances the elastic response, increases the fatigue resistance, and improves the thermal susceptibility of the pavement. The combination of plastic and rubber provides rigidity and flexibility, which is necessary for varying climatic and traffic conditions. Furthermore, this technique reduces the consumption of virgin bitumen and promotes the circular economy, elevating waste materials and harnessing them for the production of pavements as well as extending the life of pavements and decreasing the frequency of maintenance.
