| Abstract |
Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum) is a promising biomass feedstock for biogas production due to its high biomass yield and growth rate. The main drawback to using Napier grass is that its high lignin content reduces the efficiency of bioenergy conversion. Significant research has been conducted to improve the digestibility of Napier grass through several methods of pretreatment including mechanical, thermal, and alkaline pretreatment. Among these methods, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) pretreatment has been shown to increase methane yield by as much as 70%. In addition, the co-digestion of Napier grass with other organic wastes, such as piggery manure and food waste, has been shown to increase biogas production due to an
improved C:N ratio and enhanced microbial activity in the anaerobic digestion process. Studies to determine the effect of cutting age, as well as the growth conditions of Napier grass, have shown that the optimal yield of methane and thus an increase in total biogas production occurs when the grass is harvested at full maturity.
