FE Exam 2027: 7 Things to Know

1. It Starts the PE Path

The usual route is degree, FE exam, qualifying experience, PE exam and state licensure. Passing the FE alone does not make you a PE.

2. Know the Clock

The computer-based exam has 110 questions and 5 hours 20 minutes of exam time within a 6-hour appointment, including a scheduled 25-minute break.

3. Eligibility Is State-Specific

The FE is designed mainly for final-year students and recent graduates. Confirm your education and registration rules with your state licensing board.

4. Budget Beyond the Fee

NCEES lists a $225 base fee in its 2026 guide. Confirm the 2027 amount, plus possible state-board, travel and approved-calculator costs.

5. Pick the Right Discipline

Choose from seven FE disciplines. Match your degree and the official exam specifications instead of selecting the option that only sounds easiest.

6. There Is No Public Cutoff

NCEES reports pass or fail and does not publish a fixed passing score. Recent first-time discipline pass rates cited in the guide range from 61% to 69%.

7. Prepare for 10 Weeks

Study the handbook first, then practice by topic, move to mixed sets and finish with timed simulations plus an error log.
