
A defensible methodology shows how each research question becomes trustworthy evidence—not simply which technique sounds advanced.
Define the phenomenon, context, objective and answer you need. Your method should serve that question; it should not force the question to fit a favorite tool.
Use quantitative evidence for measurable patterns, qualitative evidence for experiences and context, or mixed methods when both are needed to answer the question.
Match experiment, simulation, survey or case study to the claim. A causal question needs different control and evidence than a descriptive or exploratory one.
Specify the population or test conditions, variables, sample logic, instruments, calibration and collection procedure before gathering results.
Choose metrics, statistical tests or coding rules in advance. This checks whether the planned evidence can answer the question and reduces data-driven improvisation.
Check time, equipment, skills, approvals, safety, privacy and consent. Pilot the hardest step early enough to revise the plan responsibly.
Explain why each method fits, record limitations and document justified changes. Traceability makes the study easier to assess and reproduce.
