Abstract

Miniature robotic blimps, as lighter-than-air aerial vehicles, offer advantages in long flight duration and safe aerial locomotion. However, many existing designs primarily rely on buoyant lift, often neglecting aerodynamic lift, which can lead to suboptimal aerodynamic performance, particularly in efficiency and stability. This project explores the design and development of a novel miniature robotic blimp, termed the Robotic Gliding Blimp (RGBlimp), which integrates characteristics of both a traditional robotic blimp and a fixed-wing glider. The RGBlimp incorporates a helium-filled envelope for buoyancy and a pair of wings to generate aerodynamic lift. Its locomotion and control are achieved through an internal moving mass mechanism and a pair of propellers. The scope

encompasses the comprehensive design, dynamic modeling, prototyping, and system identification of this hybrid aerial platform. This approach represents a significant effort in systematically developing a miniature robotic blimp that utilizes both moving mass control and hybrid lift generation for enhanced performance.
