Abstract

This project addresses the challenge faced by agronomy students in identifying agricultural pests, specifically fruit flies of the genus Anastrepha, due to a lack of interactive educational tools. It proposes the development of a mobile-based "virtual laboratory" that integrates augmented reality (AR) with deep learning methodologies to facilitate accurate species recognition within biointensive fruit-growing ecosystems. The system leverages the MobileNetV2 architecture, selected for its superior efficiency-to-accuracy trade-off compared to alternatives like VGG16. Real-time data processing is enabled through the integration of the Barracuda inference engine with the Unity development platform. Experimental validation was conducted using a test dataset comprising 200 images, achieving an F1 score of 0.98 and an overall

accuracy of 98%. Furthermore, usability assessments determined an optimal AR scanning distance of 15cm for effective interaction. The resulting tool demonstrates efficacy in species identification, characterized by low latency and the capability for offline operation, eliminating the dependency on cloud services for inference.
