| Abstract |
The aim of this project is a practical study of the functioning of two-stage driver and passenger airbags in the front section of an automobile. The project focuses on the advanced experimental physics of fast processes and aims to develop and use methods for the accurate measurement of some of the movement characteristics related to the operation of airbags. One of the focal parts of the project is to produce a number of cinegrams showing the sequence of events associated with the opening of the front panel of the airbag container, the unfolding of the airbag, its deflation, and the response time of the driver airbag module. In addition, the
project will include the instrumental disassembly of some actuators – solid-pyrotechnic gas-generating propellants – to understand how to classify them, what functions they serve, and what design purposes they achieve. The project will use reverse engineering techniques, direct measurements, and process flow analysis to create accurate 3D models of gas generators and two-stage airbag modules. The project aims to lay the groundwork for the scientific, technical, and experimental basis for the development and production of new internal passive safety systems in automobiles.
