| Abstract |
This research examines the creation of lightweight gearbox housings through new design methods and new materials. The study concentrates on improving the architecture of housings to create greater mass reduction with a composite material focus. Also, the study addresses the balancing act of keeping Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) parameters from being compromised in lightweight NVH designs. For this, the research study develops resonant passive Locally Resonant Metamaterials (LRM) as a solution. These materials are engineered to be resonant at the frequencies of interest and to improve the vibrational
response of the gearbox and are designed with the intention of being economically feasible for use in vibration control. The goal is to develop and optimize configurations of gearbox housings to reduce total mass while maintaining or improving energy efficiency and operational acoustic comfort, which adds to the energy efficiency and overall performance of the system, addressing the needs of the aerospace sector.
