Development innovative tool characterize fluid Project Details
| Abstract |
Structured multiphase reactors with millimetric channels offer enhanced heat and mass transfer, alongside improved reaction yield and selectivity. However, achieving these benefits requires uniform fluid distribution across all channels, as maldistribution introduces artificial dispersion that degrades overall reactor performance. Traditional diagnostic methods, such as tomography or magnetic resonance imaging, are complex and costly. This research direction explores the development and evaluation of an innovative diagnostic tool designed to characterize fluid maldistribution in multi-channel reactors. The methodology involves utilizing perforated plates embedded with gold ring electrodes positioned at the channel outlets. High-frequency signal acquisition (up to 20 kHz) captures electrical impedance variations as gas and liquid phases pass through the sensor
holes. These signals correspond to specific hydrodynamic characteristics and flow regimes, with a primary focus on the Taylor flow regime. The project framework provides guidance on signal processing techniques, hydrodynamic modeling, and the correlation of high-frequency electrical signals with localized flow patterns. This structured approach supports the design of robust diagnostic systems to optimize multiphase reactor operations.
