Effects microencapsulated phase change materials Project Details
| Abstract |
Adding microencapsulated phaseβchange materials (MPCMs) to geopolymer and cement mixes can boost the thermalβenergy storage and energy efficiency of modern building envelopes. The thermal and mechanical properties of these composites are well known, but their longβterm durability in harsh environments still needs study. This research examines how MPCMs affect chlorideβion transport and the microstructure of two mortars: ordinary Portlandβcement mortar and geopolymer mortar made from a blend of blastβfurnace slag and metakaolin. We prepare mortar specimens with three MPCM levelsβ0 %, 5 %, and 10 % by weight. For each mix we measure key durability indicators: * total waterβaccessible porosity, * poreβsize distribution using mercury intrusion porosimetry, * electrical resistivity,
and * capillary water absorption. We also assess resistance to chloride penetration with stationaryβstate and nonβstationaryβstate migration tests, which give diffusion coefficients and chlorideβbinding capacity. The results reveal how MPCMs change transport mechanisms and microstructural features, providing a complete durability profile needed for structural applications.
