Opto-Biological Modulation System Precision Manufacturing Project Details
| Abstract |
This project looks at how to combine optical design, precise manufacturing, and the eyeβs biological response to test lenses that control myopia. Traditional tests usually study optics and biology separately, which can give mixed clinical results. Our method treats the lens and the eye as one βoptoβbiologicalβ system. We connect manufacturing details and wideβfield aberration data to models of how the retina processes signals. To do this, we use a differenceβofβGaussians (DoG) filter as a computer standβin for retinal receptive fields. The DoG filter lets us see how the eye handles spatial contrast and defocus information. By linking lens design featuresβlike peripheral myopic defocus and highβorder aberrationsβto the simulated biological
responses, we create clear, quantitative guidelines for improving manufacturing processes. The work also supports the creation of highβprecision freeform machining methods and measurement standards for future ophthalmic lenses. With this framework, engineering students can model, simulate, and evaluate the complex interaction between optics and biology, tying tight manufacturing tolerances to real visual outcomes.
