Sliding Mode Hysteresis Controller-Based FOC Project Details

Abstract

Field‑oriented control (FOC) of brushless DC (BLDC) motors is a key way to boost the efficiency and dynamic performance of lightweight electric vehicles. Conventional proportional‑integral (PI) controllers often struggle when motor parameters change, when external loads vary, or when the system operates in nonlinear regions. To overcome these issues, this work investigates adding a sliding‑mode controller (SMC) and a hysteresis current controller to the FOC scheme. The SMC runs the speed loop, giving strong tracking ability and high immunity to external torque disturbances. At the same time, the hysteresis controller manages the stator currents, delivering fast torque response and low ripple. A complete mathematical model of the BLDC drive is

built to examine both transient and steady‑state behavior. Using systematic simulations, the combined control strategy is tested with different load patterns and speed profiles that mimic typical lightweight‑vehicle operation. The study evaluates speed‑tracking accuracy, torque‑ripple reduction, and robustness against parameter uncertainties, laying a solid groundwork for advanced traction‑drive applications.
