potential electricity generation wastewater treatment organic Project Details
| Abstract |
This project looks at an Hβtype microbial fuel cell (MFC) that can both produce electricity and treat organic wastewater at the same time. The cell uses organic brewery effluent as its main fuel and is seeded with waste from a distillery plant. Experiments are run under anaerobic conditions to see how well the bioβelectrochemical system works. The Hβtype MFC has two chambersβanode and cathodeβseparated by a proton exchange membrane. In the anode, electrogenic bacteria break down the organic matter, releasing electrons and protons that travel to the cathode. We study how three main variables affect performance: the concentration of the substrate, the ratio of inoculum, and the operating pH. These
factors are linked to the voltage the cell produces and how efficiently it removes pollutants. During testing we record the drop in chemical oxygen demand (COD) and the voltage generated in real time. The project also provides stepβbyβstep guidance on building the reactor, choosing electrodes, inoculating the system, and collecting data. By fineβtuning these parameters, the MFC aims to show a sustainable way to manage highβstrength industrial waste, recover renewable energy, and reduce environmental pollution.
