Application High Performance Composite Materials Project Details
| Abstract |
This research looks at how highβperformance composite materials can be used to make civilβengineering structures lighter and stronger. Conventional building materials such as steel and concrete often add a lot of weight and donβt perform as well when the loads are high. The project gives design guidance and compares these advanced composites with traditional materials. Tests and computer simulations show that the composites can reach a tensile strength of up to 120 MPa and an elastic modulus of 60 GPa. In contrast, typical steel or concrete members usually have about 80 MPa strength and 40 GPa stiffness. Because of the higher strength and stiffness, structures built with the composites can
be about 37.5 % lighter. For the same loadβbearing capacity, the weight drops from roughly 800 kg to 500 kg. The framework provided in the project helps students: – set up finiteβelement models, – choose appropriate materials, – optimize structural shapes. These steps improve load capacity, stability, and environmental sustainability. Overall, the work offers a clear method for measuring the mechanical benefits and weightβsaving potential of using composites in modern civil infrastructure.
