microgrid energy cost with electrical vehicles Project Details
| Abstract |
This research tackles two big problems in todayβs power systems: rising energy costs and growing greenhouseβgas emissions. It does so by creating an optimized energyβmanagement system (EMS) for campus microgrids. Typical microgrids depend mostly on the utility grid to meet the campusβs electricity demand. The proposed framework adds a microturbine, a photovoltaic (PV) array, a battery energyβstorage system (BESS), and electric vehicles (EVs) that can both charge from the grid (G2V) and feed power back to it (V2G). Because scheduling several energy sources together and handling demandβresponse (DR) rules leads to nonβlinear optimization problems, the study uses a MixedβInteger Linear Programming (MILP) model built in MATLAB. The EMS continuously decides
how to run each resource so that total operating costs are as low as possible while still keeping the system reliable during realβtime outages. Tests under many operating scenarios show that treating EVs as active power sources cuts overall energy costs by 46 % compared with a baseline that uses only the grid. The approach offers a solid method for microgrid optimization and gives practical guidance for demandβside management and for adding distributed storage to institutional distribution networks.
