A Novel Edge Computing-Based System Project Details

Abstract

This research addresses the critical challenge of monitoring neutral-to-earth voltage (NTEV) in electrical distribution networks, which serves as a key indicator of grounding integrity, insulation degradation, and overall electrical safety. Traditional centralized cloud-based monitoring architectures often suffer from high latency, communication dependency, and limited visibility of transient, time-dependent anomalies. To overcome these limitations, this project presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of a Smart Energy Meter–Edge Gateway (SEM-EG) architecture. The proposed system integrates continuous real-time measurement of NTEV alongside phase voltages, currents, and power-related parameters. By leveraging edge-based analytics, the SEM-EG framework enables localized anomaly detection and immediate operational awareness at the field level, while utilizing cloud-supported supervision for long-term

data aggregation and trend visualization. Experimental validation in an operational distribution panel demonstrates that the edge-based monitoring system successfully identifies time-dependent grounding faults that escape conventional periodic measurements. The implementation achieves a high measurement precision of Β±0.5% and facilitates targeted maintenance interventions, significantly reducing elevated NTEV levels. This methodology provides a robust, low-latency solution for enhancing safety and operational reliability in modern power distribution grids.
