Reactive power compensation static VAR Project Details

Abstract

This project builds a detailed simulation tool that reduces active power loss in transmission networks by finding the best places and sizes for Static VAR Compensators (SVCs). Today’s power grids struggle with transmission losses, voltage instability, and lower reliability, especially when loads change quickly. To tackle these problems, we created an Integrated Optimisation Strategy Framework (IOSF) that tests and picks the most effective optimisation methods. The approach combines three techniques: evolutionary programming, the coronavirus optimisation algorithm, and a new hybrid optimisation method. Together they locate the optimal buses for SVCs and set their reactive‑power ratings. We tested the framework on the standard IEEE 30‑Bus Reliability Test System under a range

of conditions, from normal loading to severe overloads. By comparing how fast each algorithm converges and how much computing time they need, the framework selects the configuration that cuts active power loss the most while keeping bus voltages inside allowed limits. The result is a solid method that power‑system planners can use to improve grid efficiency and voltage stability.
