Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose/Polydopamine Biocellulose Coatings Enhanced Project Details

Abstract

This research aims to create and test sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC)‑polydopamine (PDA) composite biocellulose coatings that solve the poor water stability of ordinary CMC in long‑term implantable medical devices. The coating is built with a multi‑step dip‑coating process. First, a thin PDA layer is deposited on the substrate. Next, a mixture of CMC and PDA is applied. Finally, the coated part is heated to 200 Β°C so the materials cross‑link. We examine the coating’s structure and chemistry with Fourier‑transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X‑ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). These tests confirm that amidation and esterification reactions occur, and that PDA self‑polymerizes, forming a strong macromolecular network. Degradation is

studied in phosphate‑buffered saline (PBS) at 37 Β°C, tracking the breaking of ester and amide bonds. The project provides detailed steps for measuring degradation behavior, surface wettability, and mechanical durability of the improved coatings, offering a practical way to extend the life of biocompatible interfaces on implantable medical hardware.
