Viability reducing plastic waste disposal Project Details

Abstract

The buildup of plastic that doesn’t break down is a serious worldwide environmental problem. One sustainable solution is to use the waste in civil infrastructure. This study looks at whether it is technically and economically feasible to add recycled plastic waste aggregate (RPWA) from low‑density polyethylene (LDPE) bags into hot‑mix asphalt (HMA) mixes. We use the Marshall mix design method to systematically test the physical and mechanical properties of the modified asphalt. A data‑driven framework with a new multivariate performance score evaluates the trade‑offs among strength, durability, and cost. Tests show that the best RPWA amount is 2.5 % of the mix by weight (about 6 % by volume). This

level gives the highest structural stability and performance. Higher amounts, up to 10 %, still meet design limits, but performance steadily drops after the optimal point. The study provides a clear method for using large quantities of plastic waste in pavement work. It reduces landfill waste and improves road durability, provided strict quality control is followed.
