Noise Space Learning VLA Adaptation Project Details
| Abstract |
Adapting pretrained vision‑language‑action (VLA) models for a particular robot‑manipulation task is hard because we often have limited compute power, need to stay safe around hardware, and have only a small amount of interaction data. This project looks at Noise Space Learning (NSL) as a lightweight way to adapt flow‑matching‑based VLAs. Instead of fine‑tuning every weight in the network, NSL freezes the original VLA parameters and learns a context‑dependent distribution in the noise space. Because it works in the noise space, NSL can be paired with many reinforcement‑learning and imitation‑learning methods, such as Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO), Soft Actor‑Critic (SAC), and Advantage Weighted Regression (AWR). We will implement and test these
NSL versions in simulated settings like LIBERO and RoboTwin, and also on real‑world robot manipulation tasks. We also run an information‑theoretic analysis to compare how efficient noise‑space adaptation is versus traditional parameter‑space adaptation. The final result is a clear set of guidelines for choosing the best NSL algorithm based on the available compute, amount of interaction data, and execution limits, giving a solid method for adapting robot policies when resources are tight.
