Bioinspired Design Rules Highly Mineralized Project Details
| Abstract |
This research aims to pull design ideas from highly mineralized natural compositesβlike nacre and the exoskeletons of windowβpane oystersβand apply them to twoβdimensional (2D) engineered composites. New 2D materials such as MXenes have great multifunctional properties, but they often lack the needed strength when built into larger parts. The project offers a stepβbyβstep method for studying how structure and function are linked in these biological samples. It looks closely at three design factors: controlling flake shape, creating interlocking interfaces, and improving polymer layers between the flakes. By turning these natural structures into computer models, the work can predict how stress moves through the material, how tough it is against cracks,
and how it deforms. The framework helps M.Tech students build finiteβelement models and analytical equations to simulate behaviors like tablet sliding, stitching, and pullβout. In the end, this approach connects the efficiency of natural structures with the production of synthetic materials, giving a solid base for creating highβperformance, multifunctional structural composites.
