Abstract

This work describes how a 9.7 GHz band‑pass filter (BPF) was designed and tuned for X‑band radar and satellite links. Conventional microstrip filters often have trouble fitting into small spaces and rejecting signals outside the passband. The proposed filter uses open‑ended coupled lines that carry a pair of split‑ring resonators (SRRs). The SRRs sit on an RT/Duroid 4003 substrate with a dielectric constant of 3.55 and a thickness of 0.85 mm. The design process first examined the SRR shape in detail. The study looked at how the gap in each ring, the width of the rings, and the spacing between the two rings affect the resonant frequency. Full‑wave S‑parameter simulations

were run, and the Nicolson‑Ross‑Weir (NRW) method was used to extract material parameters. These steps confirmed that the structure shows negative permittivity and a magnetic resonance close to the target 9.7 GHz. Placing two SRRs together strengthens the near‑field coupling and traps the electric field, providing extra capacitive‑inductive paths. Key results: – Bandwidth increased by 1.26 GHz – Insertion loss lowered by 0.34 dB – Out‑of‑band rejection reached 37.91 dB The paper gives a solid base for simulating planar filters loaded with metamaterials. However, real‑world fabrication tolerances and the effects of packaging still need experimental verification.
