sustainable hydrogen plasma from rare earth oxides Project Details
| Abstract |
Global recycling rates for rare-earth permanent magnets (REPMs) remain below 0.2%, despite their critical role in clean energy technologies. Machining swarf, a major industrial waste containing approximately 20 wt.% rare-earth elements (REEs), is typically difficult to recycle sustainably due to the heavy chemical and energy demands of conventional hydrometallurgical routes. This research explores hydrogen plasma reduction (HPR) as an acid-free, single-step alternative to recover REEs from Nd-Fe-B swarf. By controlling the hydrogen concentration and treatment duration, the process achieves phase separation, yielding metallic iron and a concentrated Nd2O3-rich rare-earth fraction. It also facilitates direct rare-earth hydride formation via plasma-assisted partial metallization in a molten state. Compared to the conventional REPM
production footprint of approximately 70 kg CO2-eq kg-1, this plasma-based recycling route offers a significantly lower-emission pathway. For M.Tech researchers, this resource provides guidance on evaluating the thermodynamic feasibility, phase separation kinetics, and environmental lifecycle impacts of plasma-assisted pyrometallurgical recycling systems.
