A Computational Framework Groundwater Flow Project Details
| Abstract |
This project framework looks at how groundwater flow and salt movement interact in layered porous media, which is important for managing water in semiβarid regions. A nonβlinear model is built to track both groundwater levels and solute migration in a twoβlayer aquifer: an upper phreatic (unconfined) layer and a lower confined layer. The formulation includes filtration, hydraulic exchange between the layers, densityβdependent flow changes, and external stresses such as surface recharge, evaporation, and localized pumping. For numerical solution, the governing partial differential equations are discretized with a finiteβdifference scheme that uses central spatial approximations and an implicit CrankβNicolson time stepping. To keep the phreatic layer stable and convergent, a hybrid
secondβorder temporal approximation is added. The resulting nonβlinear algebraic systems are solved with the Thomas algorithm inside an iterative quasiβlinearization loop. This computational framework helps analyze contaminant transport, evaluate salinity intrusion, and develop simulation tools for complex hydrogeological systems.
