Damage model biossourced heterogeneous material Project Details
| Abstract |
This project develops a damage model for bioβbased, heterogeneous materials, with a focus on structural timber. Traditional isotropic quasiβbrittle damage models do not capture woodβs behavior well. Our numerical framework includes woodβs natural orthotropy, its defects, and the way its strength changes with grain direction. We represent heterogeneity by assigning local variations in mechanical properties where knots and fiber misalignments occur. The model is calibrated and checked against experimental data from Mode I and Mode II fracture tests and from bending tests on nonβuniform specimens. By accounting for how different loading modes interact with the grain direction, the model can predict how damage grows and how timber elements eventually fail.
The work also provides clear research guidance, implementation help, and simulation instructions for assessing the structural integrity of bioβbased engineering materials under multiβaxial stresses. Using finiteβelement analysis, the study shows how damage develops locally, giving a reliable tool for structural health monitoring and safety assessment of timberβbased systems.
