Hydraulic-Mechanical-Damage Multifield Coupling Control Mechanism Project Details

Abstract

This project helps build and guide models that capture the many physical processes happening during hydraulic fracturing of coal seams that have been deformed by tectonic forces. The main goal is to create a hydraulic‑mechanical‑damage (HMD) coupling method that can track how fractures grow and estimate the resulting gas output. Coal reservoirs that have been tectonically deformed are very uneven and direction‑dependent, so standard fracturing models don’t work well. By combining damage mechanics with fluid‑flow and solid‑deformation equations, the project sets up a mathematical framework that can simulate the start and spread of hydraulic fractures. The coupling method includes changes in pore pressure, shifts in stress, and the gradual weakening

of the coal matrix. Numerical simulations are used to see how injection settings, in‑situ stress conditions, and coal properties affect the shape of the fracture network. The model also adds gas‑transport calculations to forecast how much gas will be produced after fracturing, over time. Overall, the work provides a step‑by‑step guide for building numerical models and running parametric studies that aim to improve fracturing performance in tough geological settings. It offers practical, method‑focused insights for reservoir stimulation and resource recovery.
