Abstract

Ambient radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting presents a viable solution for powering low-power Internet of Things (IoT) devices and wireless sensor networks. However, low ambient RF power density and the dispersion of signals across multiple frequency bands limit the conversion efficiency of conventional rectifiers. To address these challenges, this research analyzes a beamforming tri-band RF energy harvester designed for the GSM-900, DCS-1800, and WiFi-2400 bands. The system incorporates a novel tri-band Butler matrix utilizing asymmetric hybrid couplers as its beamforming network, which enhances spatial coverage while maintaining high-gain harvesting. Additionally, a tri-band rectifying circuit is integrated with a newly developed single-branch impedance matching network to convert RF power to DC

across all three target bands. Experimental measurements reported in the paper demonstrate a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 53.4% at GSM-900, 44% at DCS-1800, and 16.8% at WiFi-2400 under an ambient RF power level of -15 dBm. M.Tech students can utilize this framework to study multi-band impedance matching, beamforming networks, and planar antenna array integration for low-power energy harvesting applications.
