The across-the-board implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across multiple industries creates a paradox. It requires both the potential for sustainable digital disruption, and at the same time, the rapidly increasing negative facets of its energy consumption. Therefore, a uniquely human, competency-based approach, centered on the design and implementation of AI systems, is essential for adaptive, energy-conscious, and environmentally sustainable energy planning. This research will focus on making strides in the Green AI conversation by identifying and framing the specific competencies needed for Sustainable AI Engineering. This study is aimed at understanding the human factors that are important in the design and implementation of AI technologies and documentation systems, and aims
to reduce the adverse effects of these technologies and systems on the environment. This project will position the competencies associated with these skills as a primary building block for the responsible practice of Artificial Intelligence (AI) throughout the entire life cycle of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems, from design through implementation and support. Additionally, it will offer specific recommendations on how to incorporate these skills into educational institutions, continuing adult education, and corporate management. This work contributes to the Development of Green Information Systems (IS) by providing a unique, sustainable framework for establishing the human competencies required for AI technology that is both eco-efficient and morally responsible.
