Global prospects low-carbon photocatalytic hydrogen Project Details
| Abstract |
This project introduces a method to evaluate and improve solarβdriven photocatalytic hydrogen production worldwide. It uses a bottomβup, regionβbyβregion optimization that links an experimental kinetic model of photocatalysis with highβresolution global data on direct normal irradiance and ambient air temperature measured at more than 11,000 locations. To keep the approach environmentally and socially acceptable, the study only looks at land that is degraded or desert and that lies outside key biodiversity areas. For each possible site, the method calculates the local hydrogen output and the lifeβcycle greenhouseβgas emissions, aiming to keep the carbon footprint as low as possible. The framework provides numbers for global hydrogen production capacity and compares those
numbers to projected future hydrogen demand and the climateβchange limits on emissions. It offers practical guidance for regional energy planning, scaling the technology, and reducing environmental impact in green chemical engineering. The work also creates a solid base for placing solarβtoβchemical energy systems in the most suitable locations.
