Identifying systemic risks mitigation strategies Project Details
| Abstract |
This study addresses the systemic risks associated with Artificial Intelligence (AI) implementation in agriculture, moving beyond the prevalent focus on its benefits in areas such as plant protection and production. While AI offers transformative potential, a comprehensive analysis of its potential impacts across agricultural systems, including planting, cropping, irrigation, and fertilization, remains underexplored. This research employs a narrative review and the Social-Technical-Ecological Systems (STES) framework to systematically identify and categorize these risks, using plant protection and development as illustrative examples. Within the social subsystem, identified risks encompass unemployment, social inequality, and systemic exclusion. The technical subsystem faces challenges such as uncertainties in AI devices, inaccuracies in model decisions, issues with
untraceable black-box decision-making, and network security vulnerabilities. Furthermore, the ecological subsystem is susceptible to risks including biodiversity loss, climate uncertainties, and potential environmental pollution. To counter these identified challenges, the study proposes targeted mitigation strategies, emphasizing the enhancement of farmers' livelihood resilience, improving AI inclusivity and accessibility, and integrating ethical principles within the social domain. This framework provides guidance for structuring projects aimed at understanding and addressing the multifaceted impacts of AI in agricultural contexts.
