Materials Acceleration Platform Electrochemistry Platform Project Details

Abstract

This initiative includes creating and executing an automated high-volume electrochemical system that will mitigate the issues associated with conventional corrosion testing. Standard techniques are labor-intensive, lengthy, and are affected by variability due to the tester, and as a result, are inadequate for producing large volumes of high-quality datasets necessary to meet the growing demands of data-driven materials science. The system that will be developed for this purpose is called a Materials Acceleration Platform for Electrochemistry (MAP-E). This system combines state-of-the-art robotic liquid handling and automated sample transfer systems with multi-channel potentiostat control to perform simultaneous electrochemical testing and the automated collection or extraction of corrosion data to limit the need

for operator involvement to the first and last tests of an experiment. The system has been shown to produce the same results for various tests (including the measurement of pitting potential). Additionally, the system is capable of self-generating diagrams of a material's environmental stability by intelligently sampling and testing throughout a multidimensional space. This system will significantly reduce the time required to complete corrosion research, as well as provide research data required for materials discovery, alloy development, and the evaluation of a material's durability in various service conditions.
