Production butyl levulinate solvolysis high-gravity Project Details
| Abstract |
This research project develops and validates a detailed kinetic model for turning highβgravity fructose into butyl levulinate (BL) using the solid acid catalyst Amberlite IR120. Butyl levulinate is a very promising biofuel and oxygenated fuel additive. Traditional esterification of levulinic acid needs a lot of postβtreatment, while directly reacting sugars with alcohol is more sustainable and cheaper for largeβscale production. Highβgravity conditions, however, create major massβtransfer and phaseβchange problems, especially the dissolution of solid fructose into the liquid. To solve these issues, the project builds a mathematical model that combines solidβtoβliquid dissolution rates, intermediate reaction steps, and degradation kinetics. The kinetic parameters are estimated and checked against experiments that vary
the initial fructose concentration, temperature, and catalyst loading. The results give practical guidance for reactor design, process intensification, and scaling up biomassβderived ester production, and they provide a solid method for simulating multiphase catalytic systems.
