Solar-Powered Refrigerator Wheels Engineering Design Project Details
| Abstract |
Transporting and storing farm products adds a lot of greenhouseβgas emissions because most refrigeration still relies on fossilβfuel power. This research designs, builds, and tests a mobile cooling unit that runs on solar power and is aimed at smallβscale farms. The unit combines an insulated cooling chamber with a solarβpanelβdriven battery system to keep harvested crops fresh while they are being moved. Input from local smallβscale farmers shaped the required functions, size limits, and design details of the mobile box. Experiments measured how well the chamber maintained low temperatures and how efficiently the solarβbattery setup charged and discharged under different weather conditions. The data show that the solarβpowered refrigerator can
reach and hold the target temperatures needed for perishable produce. As a result, this portable, lowβemission cooler can replace traditional coldβchain methods, making local agricultural distribution more sustainable and providing a practical offβgrid cooling solution.
