State-to-state approach hypersonic thermochemical nonequilibrium Project Details
| Abstract |
Highβspeed atmospheric entry and hypersonic flight create very hot, chemically active gases that are far from equilibrium. Conventional multiβtemperature models often miss important details in these conditions. The stateβtoβstate (STS) kinetics method solves this by following the population of each individual vibrational and electronic quantum state of the gas species. This project gives research guidance and practical help for using the STS approach in simulations of hypersonic, thermochemically nonequilibrium flows. Key elements of the work include: – Examining how stateβspecific reaction rates interact with the surrounding flow and comparing the results to traditional multiβtemperature models, such as Parkβs twoβtemperature formulation. – Writing the master equations that describe the evolution of
each quantum state and defining the transition rates between states. – Tackling the computational difficulty of solving large, stiff ordinaryβdifferentialβequation (ODE) systems that must be coupled to NavierβStokes solvers. – Offering strategies to cut computational cost, like grouping similar states together or using coarseβgrain models. The resulting review and simulation framework aims to produce highβfidelity aerothermodynamic models. These models are needed for accurate thermalβprotectionβsystem design and for advancing hypersonic vehicle technology.
