Data Spaces are establishing themselves as a decentralized alternative for sovereign data sharing across multiple organizations. However, their widespread adoption faces significant challenges, particularly the lack of proven business models that effectively encourage participation and foster value creation. The inherent nature of data spaces dictates that their business models capture value differently compared to both traditional business models and platform business models. This research addresses this critical challenge by developing the Data Space Canvas, a structured framework specifically designed for the systematic design and alignment of business models within data spaces. The canvas, which consists of nine interconnected building blocks, was developed following a robust design science research methodology. Its
modular and role-specific structure is engineered to facilitate a shared understanding among diverse stakeholders and to provide comprehensive support for business model development across all participating entities. This framework contributes a practical tool that enables organizations to effectively conceptualize, communicate, and refine their strategic role and associated business model within the complex and evolving environment of data spaces.
