Toward Sub-100 ps TOF-PET Systems Project Details
| Abstract |
This research evaluation addresses the critical trade-off between timing resolution and power consumption in Time-of-Flight Positron Emission Tomography (TOF-PET) scanner electronics. While achieving sub-100 ps coincidence time resolution (CTR) is highly desirable for image quality, prior front-end architectures demanded excessive power per channel, limiting large-scale scanner integration. The paper evaluates the FastIC front-end, an 8-channel ASIC fabricated in 65 nm CMOS technology that operates at a low power consumption of 12 mW per channel while simultaneously measuring pulse energy and arrival time. The evaluation couples the FastIC ASIC with various analog Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) and scintillators. Specifically, using Hamamatsu S13360-3050PE SiPMs with LSO:Ce:0.2 crystals yields a CTR of 95 ยฑ
3 ps FWHM, while FBK NUV-HD LF2 M0 SiPMs achieve an outstanding 76 ยฑ 2 ps FWHM. For longer LYSO:Ce:0.2 crystals, the CTR values are reported at 156 ยฑ 4 ps and 127 ยฑ 3 ps FWHM, respectively. Additionally, the setup is evaluated with a TlCl pure Cherenkov emitter. This resource provides structural guidance for M.Tech students to model, simulate, or analyze low-power front-end readout topologies for high-precision radiation detection.
