wind energy potential bonny island coastal Project Details
| Abstract |
This study evaluates the windβenergy potential of Bonny Islandβs coastal area in Nigeria using seven years of weather data (2017β2023). The analysis fits the twoβparameter Weibull distribution to the windβspeed data and calculates the windβpower density that could be harvested. Key findings – Mean wind speed: **4.15 m/s** – Average windβpower density: **157.9 W/mΒ²** – Median power density: **129 W/mΒ²** Turbulence intensity was also examined. The turbulence is moderate and stable, with about **35 %** of the time falling in the 0.15β0.20 range. Seasonal differences are clear. During the rainy season the wind is noticeably stronger and the power density is higher than in the dry season. The results give
a solid baseline and a clear method for judging whether lowβtoβmediumβspeed wind turbines are viable in coastal West Africa. This information can help plan sustainable microgrids and local renewableβenergy projects.
