| Abstract |
This experimental study solves one of the many issues caused by coal-fired thermal power plants byrecycling fly ash and bottom ash in Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA). In this study, fly ash works as a mineral filler, while bottom ash operates as fine aggregate, thus encouraging sustainable waste management. Additionally, emulsion-coated natural sisal fibers have been incorporated into the mix to improve performance and provide an alternative to conventional paving materials that are less environmentally friendly. Dense graded bituminous mixes (DBM) were prepared as per the MORTH (2013) guidelines using VG-30 bitumen with a nominal maximum aggregate size (NMAS) of 26.5 mm. Sisal fibers, which were pre-coated with the SS-1 emulsion,
were varied systematically in terms of content (0%β1%) and length (5 mmβ20 mm) to study their effect. The optimal binder content, optimal fiber dosage, and optimal fiber length were determined using the Marshall Mix Design method. The optimum mix, which contained 5.57% binder, 0.5% fiber, and 10 mm fibers, reached a maximum Marshall Stability of 15 kN. The modified HMAβs mechanical properties were further improved in the performance tests: Tensile Strength Ratio (TSR), Indirect Tensile Strength (ITS), static creep, and moisture susceptibility tests. The results confirm coal ash and sisal fibers as suitable sustainable materials for asphalt mixtures.
