upcycling post-consumer plastic waste electrospun nanofibrous Project Details
| Abstract |
Postβconsumer plastic waste is a major environmental problem, so we need new ways to turn it into useful products. This research focuses on converting recycled plastics into electrospun nanofiber membranes that can act as separators in sustainable energyβstorage devices. First, the recovered polymers are dissolved in carefully chosen solvent mixtures. The solution is then electrospun to create highly porous, mechanically strong nanofiber scaffolds. These membranes are thoroughly characterized to measure their shape, thermal stability, ability to take up electrolyte, and ionic conductivity. By adjusting electrospinning settingsβvoltage, flow rate, and tipβtoβcollector distanceβwe can tune the separatorβs properties to match or surpass those of standard commercial polyolefin separators. Electrochemical tests, including ionβtransport
speed and chargeβdischarge cycling stability, will determine whether the upcycled separators perform well in lithiumβion or sodiumβion batteries. The project provides a stepβbyβstep framework for linking waste reduction with advanced energyβstorage materials and for evaluating the mechanical and electrochemical performance of sustainable polymerβbased battery components.
